About the POCT program

The Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) Professional Certification Program was established in 2018 by the ADLM Board of Certification as an independent, non-governmental body to provide specialty certification in POCT. The program oversees the exam-based certification process for individuals that have demonstrated professional experience and comprehensive knowledge of the POCT field.

We accomplish this by:

  • Establishing and ensuring rigorous certification standards for POCT professionals.
  • Developing and administering an exam-based process to evaluate the knowledge of POCT professionals.
  • Recognizing POCT professionals that are actively engaged in the healthcare system.
  • Serving the community of certified diplomates.

The Certified Point-of-Care Testing Professional (CPP) credential certifies individuals as competent in point-of-care testing. It documents that the individual has demonstrated competency in quality management, education and training, instrument selection and validation/verification, connectivity and information technology, leadership and communication, sample types, policies and procedures, clinical applications, technology and methodology, and US regulations and compliance. Additional details on exam topics are available in the Scope of Exam Content.

Mission

The mission of the POCT Professional Certification Program is to provide POCT professionals with formal recognition of their specialized knowledge. The program promotes the value of having recognized POCT expertise in the healthcare system and it aims to advance the delivery of patient care by setting rigorous certification standards of POCT professionals.

Vision

The vision of the POCT Professional Certification Program is to support, foster, and unify dedicated POCT professionals to ensure the delivery of secure and exceptional patient care.

Point-of-Care Testing Professional Certification Committee

The Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) Professional Certification Committee oversees the certification process for individuals who apply to receive the Certified POCT Professional (CPP) designation. This certification program is designed for all personnel who perform diagnostic tests outside the central laboratory, including near-patient testing, point-of-care device selection and validation, quality management, operator training, regulatory compliance, and liaison with the central laboratory. Those who receive the designation CPP will demonstrate to patients and healthcare colleagues and institutions that they have proven expertise in this field.

Other program contributors

The ADLM Board of Certification would also like to acknowledge the point-of-care testing experts on the Certification Program Task Force who developed the POCT Professional Certification program, as well as the additional POCT experts throughout North America who collaborated to develop the certification exam.
