Charles E. Pippenger received the 10th AACC Award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry in a Special Area, the area in this case being therapeutic drug monitoring.This award is sponsored by Roche Analytical Instruments, Inc.
Dr. Pippenger was born on July 12, 1939, in Brook, IN. He attended Culver Military Academy, then Ball State University, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1961 and the degree of Master of Arts in Biology in 1962.From 1962 to 1965 he was associated with the Departments of Zoology and Neurology at the State University of Iowa, Iowa City, as teaching assistant and research associate.His research was directed toward the identification of abnormal metabolites and metabolic pathways associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.In 1965 he was appointed director of Clinical Chemistry and Biochemical Research Laboratories at New Castle State Hospital, New Castle, IN.It was there that he developed an interest in the pharmacological interrelationships between antiepileptic drug therapy and the epilepsies.
He entered graduate training at Purdue University in 1968 in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, where he studied the relation between the anticonvulsant effects of hydroxylamine and aminooxyacetic acid on brain γ-aminobutyric acid concentrations in rats and mice.He published his thesis on that subject and received the Doctorate of Philosophy in Pharmacology in 1971 from Purdue University.
From 1971 to the present, Dr. Pippenger has been with the Department of Neurology of Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons.
