Cancer Diagnostics and Monitoring Division logo

Cancer Diagnostics & Monitoring Division (CDM)

The Cancer Diagnostics and Monitoring Division serves as an interdisciplinary forum for clinical chemists, laboratory scientists and technologists, pathologists, clinicians, geneticists, and researchers interested in developing and studying laboratory assays and tools for the diagnosis and monitoring of cancer.

To allow our members to stay at the forefront of cancer diagnostics and monitoring and improve patient outcomes, updates and educational forums on advances in the use of established and emerging molecular techniques and tumor markers will be organized. Special considerations for other types of testing relevant to cancer patients, such as hematology and infectious diseases will be included. These initiatives ensure continuous professional development, drive advocacy, and promote the dissemination of valuable insights and best practices.

To foster communication, innovation, and collaboration between laboratorians and clinicians, the exchange of ideas, experiences, and scholarly activities is encouraged. We also seek to establish strong partnerships with other ADLM divisions, professional societies, diagnostics and technology manufacturers, as well as regulatory agencies in the field of tumor markers and molecular cancer diagnostics.

Cardiovascular Health Division (CVH)

The Cardiovascular Health Division is a dynamic group that brings together experts from various fields to advance our understanding of cardiovascular health. With a focus on laboratory diagnostics for risk prediction-management, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, arrhythmias, and vascular disease, our division aims to promote proactive approaches to cardiovascular health.

Within the Cardiovascular Health Division, our members explore the role of biomarkers in diagnosis, risk stratification, and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases. By fostering research, innovation, and knowledge exchange, we aim to enhance the clinical utility and analytical performance of assays for biomarkers of cardiovascular health. Additionally, our division provides a platform for discussions on emerging technologies, standardization, and other critical topics in the field. Through annual educational meetings, we share insights, advancements, and best practices related to cardiovascular diseases.

Recognizing the significance of risk factors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, tobacco use, and diabetes in cardiovascular disease development, we are committed to promoting monitoring strategies. Our collaborative efforts, driven by a shared vision for cardiovascular health, aim to improve outcomes, drive advancements, and contribute to the well-being and cardiovascular wellness of individuals.

Comparative Laboratory Medicine Division (CLM)

The Comparative Laboratory Medicine Division is an active and comprehensive group that integrates multiple specialties within the field of laboratory medicine. Its reach extends to preclinical and clinical research, as well as diagnostic applications in humans, diverse research species, and veterinary medicine. At the forefront of the division's mission is providing leadership within the association, driving advancements in science, technology, and the integration of clinical laboratory data. By promoting and facilitating knowledge exchange, the division actively fosters improvements in the practice of clinical laboratory science across various species, including humans.

A key focus of the division lies in supporting the development of cutting-edge methods to detect both beneficial and adverse effects on specific target organs and cellular changes linked to diseases and xenobiotic agents. These efforts span across a wide range of therapeutic and disease areas.

Through collaborations with therapeutic and diagnostic manufacturers, as well as preclinical, clinical, and pharmacological organizations, the division drives progress and innovation. It serves as a vital platform for sharing pertinent information on instrumentation, methods of analysis for diverse animal models, selection of appropriate species for research purposes, and the evaluation of translational studies to human medicine.

Data Science & Informatics Division (DSI)

The Data Science & Informatics Division scope of practice ranges from clinical laboratory information system issues to the interoperation of the laboratory with practitioners in interactive clinical decision support.

The Division collaborates with other divisions, industry, and other professional associations to achieve these central goals: (1) help members use the LIS to translate data into patient care, (2) help members use data science to enhance quality management, and (3) help members prepare for advances in informatics.

The Division provides leadership to the association in matters of information science, technology, and the integration of clinical laboratory data using laboratory information systems, middleware, and other informatics tools.

Endocrinology & Metabolism Division (ENDOMET)

The Endocrinology and Metabolism Division plays a pivotal role in advancing the relationship between clinical endocrinology, laboratory medicine, and metabolic health research. Our mission is to support this relationship by fostering collaboration with professional organizations, promoting educational opportunities, and establishing peer-reviewed resources tailored to the needs of our Endocrinology and Metabolism Division members.

The Endocrinology and Metabolism Division welcomes ADLM members interested in the biochemical assessment of nutritional status and its applications, those with interests in the field of endocrinology, including bone diseases, thyroid disorders, diabetes, pituitary disorders, adrenal disorders, and disorders related to male and female hormones, and we explore the intersection of nutrition and endocrinology, recognizing the significance of nutritional factors in managing endocrine-related conditions.

The Endocrinology and Metabolism Division aims to enhance understanding, promote professional development, and encourage the exchange of knowledge and ideas among our members. By fostering a collaborative environment and offering valuable resources, we empower individuals involved in the fields of endocrinology, metabolism, and nutrition sciences to provide improved care and drive advancements in clinical diagnostics and patient outcomes.

The Genetics & Genomics Division advances patient care and the field of molecular pathology and personalized medicine by encouraging the study, advancing the science, and expanding and improving the use of molecular biology techniques.

The Genetics & Genomics Division shares best practices and other matters of interest to laboratorians involved in all aspects of molecular pathology and provides resources to databases, toolkits, and other reference materials involving sequencing, genomics, metabolic pathways, and the like.

The Genetics & Genomics Division collaborates with other divisions regarding shared interests, diagnostic-oriented (laboratory and imaging) and disease-oriented organizations, with therapeutics and diagnostics manufacturers, and with clinical and pharmacological organizations.

Health Equity and Access Division logo

Health Equity & Access Division (HEA)

The Health Equity and Access Division leads by employing the equity, inclusion, and diversity principles of integration, promotion, and advocacy to advance global science and the practice of laboratory medicine in the following ways:

  • Identifying health disparities in diseases/syndrome incidence and access to healthcare and the populations impacted. Populations include but are not limited to racialized minorities, pediatric, geriatric, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, questioning, and others (LGBTQIA+) transgender and gender nonconforming, low socioeconomic status and institutionalized.
  • Identifying barriers that populations face when seeking healthcare and creating interventions to reduce/eliminate barriers.
  • Promotes the inclusion and participation in the science, practice, and policymaking of laboratory medicine field in an equitable manner.
  • Examines the impact of systemic racism and bias on the practice and delivery of medicine in the United States and internationally.
  • Educates the ADLM membership on strategies that can be employed to promote health equity by reducing health disparities in the practice of laboratory medicine through sponsored or collaborative educational activities, meetings, and membership-developed scientific articles.
  • Provides a forum for the dissemination of information that is related to Health Equity, Health Disparities, and the practice of Laboratory Medicine/Pathology.

Hematology & Coagulation Division (HEMCOAG)

The Hematology and Coagulation Division supports and advances clinical hematology and coagulation within laboratory medicine and patient care both nationally and internationally. Our experts in hematology and coagulation are dedicated to bridging the gap between clinical service and laboratory medicine, helping young professionals develop in their careers, and educating scientists, physicians, and allied health professionals.

To accomplish this, the Hematology and Coagulation division efforts may include: establishing seminars, webinars or virtual programs; development of teaching curriculum; encouraging Artery dialogue; advocating on issues related to hematological and/or coagulation disorders; collaborating with other hematological/coagulation clinical societies to develop practice guidelines, conduct research studies, and development of publications.

The Immunology & Infectious Disease Division is dedicated to advancing knowledge, research, and collaboration in the fields of immunology, infectious diseases, and microbiology. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the critical role of the clinical laboratory and highlighted the need for guidance and resources in infectious disease diagnostics. The Immunology & Infectious Disease Division, building upon the experiences and lessons learned during this global crisis, aims to provide valuable educational content, scientific resources, and expert guidance to the healthcare community and the general public.

The Immunology & Infectious Disease Division focuses on a variety of clinical and diagnostic immunology tests overseen by laboratory medicine professionals. The division provides a forum for discussion of advancements in the fields of immunotherapy, immune profiling and precision medicine, autoimmune diseases, immunological biomarkers, age-related immune challenges, etc.

The Immunology & Infectious Disease Division concentrates on the latest developments in infectious disease diagnostics and microbiological testing. The Division aims to stay at the forefront of emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and advancements in diagnostic technologies. Moreover, the group seeks collaborative opportunities with esteemed professional organizations such as the American Society for Microbiology, Infectious Disease Society of America, and others, fostering knowledge exchange among experts in the field.

Members of the Immunology & Infectious Disease Division have access to a diverse network of professionals and thought leaders in the fields of microbiology, infectious diseases, immunology, and clinical diagnostics. Through regular meetings, educational activities, and collaborative projects, the group provides a platform for knowledge exchange, professional development, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Innovation & Technology Division (INT)

The Innovation and Technology Division fosters the development of new approaches and tools to be applied to various disciplines within laboratory medicine. Within the Innovation and Technology Division, members exchange expertise, network, and work to incorporate new methodologies into clinical diagnostics. From basic lateral flow immunoassays to mass spectrometry-based techniques to large-scale omics-based approaches, the Innovation and Technology Division strives to support the development of new assays, methods, and platforms that may be used for scientific research or developed with the goal of clinical translation.

The members of the Innovation and Technology Division have diverse backgrounds and expertise; members include scientists from industry, academia, and practicing clinicians. In addition to providing regular educational and networking opportunities for members, the Innovation and Technology Division promotes an environment that is collaborative and supportive of scientific advancement for all members. The Innovation and Technology Division hosts meetups and mentoring sessions with experts for members interested in learning more about specific types of technology.

Pediatric & Maternal-Fetal Division (PMF)

The Pediatric and Maternal-Fetal Division promotes activities associated with pediatrics, maternal and fetal clinical chemistry to enhance understanding, support professional development, and encourage the exchange and knowledge and ideas among our members.

To accomplish this, Pediatric and Maternal-Fetal Division efforts may include: establishing seminars, webinars or virtual programs; development of teaching curriculum; encouraging Artery dialogue; advocating on Pediatric and Maternal-Fetal-related issues; contributing or developing practice guideline; research in Pediatric and Maternal-Fetal areas; development of publications; and collaborating with outside organizations.

We welcome members interested in supporting and participating in these division efforts. As we accomplish these efforts, we aim to improve the scientific and clinical knowledge base of these specialized areas and to provide professional networking and growth opportunities for our members.

Point-of-Care Testing Division (POCT)

The Point-of-Care Testing Division provides a forum for the development and dissemination of point-of-care testing knowledge as it relates to its use for self-monitoring (i.e., acute and chronic diseases), in-hospital use (i.e., emergency department), and lab and healthcare provider-directed community testing (i.e., physician’s office).

The Point-of-Care Testing Division disseminates information about critical care and point-of-care testing and its alternatives. The Point-of-Care Testing Division encourages and supports research in several domains including cost effectiveness, patient outcomes, novel biomarkers discovery, and test method development.

The Point-of-Care Testing Division liaises with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies and other professional societies with related interests.

Stewardship and Management Sciences Division logo

Stewardship & Management Sciences Division (SPM)

The Stewardship & Management Sciences Division concentrates on developing members’ skills as leaders within the laboratory.

The Stewardship & Management Sciences Division provides a forum for discussing challenges and scientific research related to the management of clinical laboratories including finance, marketing, personnel, information systems, government regulations, legal issues, quality and safety, test utilization, and communications.

Further educational tools including webinars and sessions at the ASM are provided in these areas. Advocacy related to laboratory management will ensure thoughtful regulatory requirements and fair reimbursement and recognition of the importance of the laboratory.

Therapeutic Drug Management and Toxicology Division logo 

Therapeutic Drug Management & Toxicology Division (TDMTOX)

Members of the Therapeutic Drug Management & Toxicology Division (TDM and Toxicology) are united by their interests in monitoring compounds of pharmacological and/or toxicological relevance in biological specimens. The TDM and Toxicology Division’s scientific focus encompasses clinical toxicology, forensic toxicology, workplace drug testing, occupational health testing, and includes assays in a wide array of matrices.

Within the therapeutic drug management field, our members have interests ranging from immunosuppressants to antiepileptics to developing quantitative assays to support clinical trials of new drugs. TDM and Toxicology Division members have expertise in a variety of analytical techniques including laboratory developed tests using mass spectrometry-based platforms.

Though our members’ interests are diverse, the TDM and Toxicology Division strives to offer regular opportunities for discussion of best practices and emerging scientific findings in the field, undertaken with a collaborative and supportive approach. The TDM and Toxicology Division supports the development of knowledge in the field through our members’ participation in guideline development and recognizes contributions from early career investigators through a recurring awards program.
