Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Ranking Member on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, recently wrote to Secretary of Health and Human Services seeking answers to issues raised n a New York Times article, “When They Warn of Rare Disorders, These Prenatal Tests Are Usually Wrong” and January 1st. Rep. Rodgers was concerned about the reported inaccuracies of these tests.
AACC wrote to Rep. McMorris Rodgers addressing several of her concerns. The association stated that the article failed to distinguish between a screening and diagnostic test and that, in most instances, the expectation is that results of those tests will differ. That does not mean the results are inaccurate as indicated by the journalist. AACC did acknowledge that the article raised several questions worthy of discussion and suggested that the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee (CLIAC), which is currently updating the CLIA standards, may be a good venue for continuing this discussion.
