ADLM endorses legislation to address the laboratory workforce shortage

In November 2024, ADLM endorsed the Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage Relief Act of 2024, which outlines targeted measures to address the critical shortage of clinical laboratory professionals. This shortage has placed considerable strain on the healthcare system, with implications for diagnostic access, care quality, and patient outcomes.

The legislation proposes expanding the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) to include laboratory professionals, prioritizing their recruitment and placement in areas most affected by staffing gaps. Loan repayment incentives for laboratory professionals are also included to alleviate financial barriers and support workforce sustainability. Funding for educational programs, with an emphasis on culturally competent care and interprofessional collaboration, aims to foster a diverse and prepared workforce capable of meeting healthcare demands.

These measures are designed to mitigate diagnostic delays and strengthen laboratory medicine’s role in healthcare delivery. ADLM will continue to monitor the progress of the Act and advocate for its implementation to address both immediate and long-term workforce challenges.
