On September 10, 2025, the House Energy & Commerce Health Subcommittee advanced a series of public health reauthorization bills, including the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act (H.R. 4709). This legislation would preserve and expand federal support for state newborn screening programs, ensuring continued access to early detection of rare but treatable conditions.
ADLM has consistently supported greater federal investment in newborn screening as a critical component of improving health outcomes for infants. Earlier this year, ADLM endorsed H.R. 4709 and highlighted the essential role of laboratory medicine in delivering timely and accurate newborn screening. The laboratory community has emphasized that sustained funding and program improvements can directly translate into earlier diagnoses, more effective treatments, and better long-term outcomes for patients and families.
This work exists in tandem with ADLM’s broader advocacy on pediatric testing equity, including the association’s recent policy report on improving access to diagnostic testing for children. These efforts underscore the vital role laboratories play in safeguarding children’s health and ensuring equitable access to high-quality testing nationwide. ADLM will continue engaging with Congress to support its reauthorization.
