ADLM releases position statement on responsible healthcare AI policy

On February 10, 2026, ADLM released a new position statement calling on Congress and federal health agencies to modernize laboratory regulations and establish clear guardrails for artificial intelligence (AI) in laboratory medicine.

The statement recognizes AI’s potential to improve diagnostic accuracy, streamline workflows, and reduce unnecessary testing. At the same time, it warns that biased algorithms trained on non-representative data can worsen disparities and compromise patient safety.

ADLM urges policymakers to update CLIA to explicitly address AI-enabled systems, convene experts to develop consensus validation standards, and expand federal investment in laboratory data harmonization and standardization. The association also calls on developers to prioritize data diversity, transparency, and laboratory-level performance verification.

Together, these steps would promote innovation while safeguarding equity, reliability, and patient trust.
