Description

When considering testing for respiratory diseases, there are multiple guidelines to determine who should be tested and for which disease. The Infectious Diseases Society of America has guidelines for influenza testing, COVID-19 testing, and community-acquired pneumonia. By understanding the guidelines, one can run the necessary tests to have the best medical impact.

Diagnostic stewardship involves using the right test at the right time for the right patient. This webinar will discuss guidelines and factors to improve the test ordering of infectious diseases and other conditions.

Target audience

This activity is designed for physicians, lab supervisors, lab directors (and/or assistant directors), lab managers (supervisory and/or non-supervisory), medical technologists, and point-of-care coordinators.

Learning objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define the principles of diagnostic stewardship and its relationship to antibiotic stewardship
  • Describe the importance of designing the electronic health record to improve test ordering for infectious diseases
  • Recognize the role of Gateway-based restrictions as an effective and promising approach to scaling diagnostic stewardship
