Description

Cystatin C offers a more reliable estimate of kidney function compared to creatinine alone, as it is unaffected by patient muscle mass, diet, or inflammation. Despite recommendations for its expanded use in the 2024 KDIGO Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation and Management of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), the utilization of cystatin C in clinical practice remains low.

In this webinar, participants will learn how to overcome barriers to implementing cystatin C testing into a care setting and best practices to effectively manage the change in the estimation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR).

Target audience

This activity is designed for physicians, lab supervisors, lab directors (and/or assistant directors), lab managers (supervisory and/or non-supervisory, pathologists, and other laboratory professionals overseeing/conducting within this topic.

Learning objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe current guidelines for the evaluation and management of CKD and why cystatin C is recommended for the estimation of GFR.
  • Identify barriers to the implementation of cystatin C for in-house testing and explain how to overcome them.
  • Describe best practices for the introduction of cystatin C to estimate GFR including how to partner with clinicians and give an example of how one institution is using cystatin C in practice.
