Michael J. McPhaul

A headshot of Michael J McPhaulMichael J. McPhaul, MD, joined Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute as endocrinology medical director in June 2012. Prior to his recruitment to Quest, Dr. McPhaul was professor of internal medicine in the division of endocrinology and metabolism and associate dean at UT Southwestern Medical Center. During his 25 year tenure at Southwestern, his investigative career was clinical and translational in nature, leading to an international reputation in the fields of androgen action, diseases of the pituitary, and clinical research. He has published extensively, including more than 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 23 review articles and book chapters.

Since joining Quest as medical director for endocrinology and metabolism, Dr. McPhaul has focused primarily on the development of tools to assist in the comprehensive care of patients with prediabetes, the metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, and the development of new diagnostic tests to permit the early identification of patients with diabetic complications. In his position as endocrinology and metabolism medical director, Dr. McPhaul has continued to develop and enhance offerings to permit the accurate measurement of peptide and steroid hormone levels. His most recent work has focused on the development of tests to quantitate the future risk of diabetes and to accurately assess the level of insulin resistance in individual patients. In 2023, Dr. McPhaul founded Metabolic Endocrine and Medical Care and Consulting. He serves as a consultant to Quest Diagnostics.

Dr. McPhaul is an active member of a number of professional organizations, including AACE, the Endocrine Society, the American Diabetes Association, the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, and the American Federation for Medical Research (AFMR). He serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Investigative Medicine High Impact Case Reports.
